The Nylon turf surface handles water exposure without degrading. Whether the backing is waterproof depends on the specific mat — 5/8 foam backing is waterproof, 5mm foam and urethane are water-resistant but not waterproof.

Water on the turf surface is not a problem — the Nylon fibers are hydrophobic and drain quickly. The more important consideration is the backing. A waterproof backing means the mat can be left in standing water without moisture seeping through. A non-waterproof backing means moisture will eventually penetrate — which is fine for use and cleaning but means you should allow the mat to dry before rolling it for storage.

How Do I Clean a Golf Mat?

Hose the turf surface to remove loose dirt, debris, and fine particles. For deeper cleaning, a pressure washer on a low to medium setting removes compacted dirt from between turf fibers. Let the mat dry fully before rolling for storage — particularly for 5mm foam-backed mats where moisture in the foam can create mildew if stored rolled while wet.

For outdoor backyard setups used after rain, allowing the surface to drain for 15 to 20 minutes before practicing gives a cleaner hitting surface experience. Standing water on the turf surface drains quickly on most All Turf Mats golf mats.

Should I Store a Golf Mat While It Is Wet?

No — do not roll and store a golf mat while it is still wet, particularly foam-backed versions. Rolling a wet foam-backed mat traps moisture inside the roll where it cannot evaporate, which can lead to mildew developing in the foam over time. Allow the mat to dry flat or standing upright before rolling for storage.

For 5/8 waterproof foam-backed mats, surface water drains and evaporates relatively quickly. Allow 1 to 4 hours of drying time depending on conditions before rolling for indoor storage. For urethane-backed mats, drying time is faster because there is no foam layer to retain moisture — typically 30 to 60 minutes in good drying conditions.
