Fairway Golf Mat Buying Guide

The golf practice mat built for hitting directly off the surface. Everything you need to know about the Fairway line — pile height, backing options, rubber tee holes, and which configuration fits your practice goals.

By the All Turf Mats product team — Manufactured in Dalton, Georgia  ·  Last updated: June 2026

The Fairway golf mat is built for golfers who practice the shots they hit most — irons, wedges, and chip shots struck directly off the turf surface. The 3/8 inch Nylon face pile gives a tight, fairway-style lie that replicates clean ball contact off real fairway grass. For rubber tee use, several Fairway SKUs include pre-punched rubber tee holes at multiple positions across the mat surface.

This guide covers the full Fairway golf mat lineup — from the compact 1x2 portable mat to the 6x12 large-format driving range mat — including foam backing vs urethane, rubber tee hole options, and 2nd Quality options for budget-conscious buyers.

What the Fairway Golf Mat Is Built For

The Fairway mat's primary use case is hitting directly off the mat surface — no tee required. The 3/8 inch Nylon face pile creates a tight lie that gives irons and wedges clean, consistent contact similar to a well-groomed fairway. This is the right mat for players focused on ball-striking quality, divot simulation, and shot shaping from a clean flat lie.

Secondary use cases include rubber tee practice for those who want teed shots without wooden tee use, chipping practice onto a target surface, and general driving practice where a tighter lie is preferred over the tee-box feel of the Super Tee.

Fairway vs Super Tee — Choosing the Right Mat

Which Mat Is Right for You?

FairwayIron practice, wedge practice, chipping, hitting directly off the surface, rubber tee use. Best for a tight fairway-style lie and clean club contact.
Super TeeDriver practice, fairway wood practice, wooden tee use, tee-box style hitting. Best when real wooden tees and a longer pile height are the priority.
First CutRough simulation, variable lie practice, first-cut style lies. Best for golfers who want more realistic imperfect lie practice.

Backing Options Explained

Fairway mats are available in three backing types. Each serves a different use case and practice environment.

5mm Flexible Foam

The 5mm foam is the most versatile Fairway backing. It is flexible, rollable, and slip-resistant. It provides some anti-fatigue properties and adds enough weight to help the mat resist wrinkling or bunching underfoot. It is not waterproof or closed-cell. This is the right backing for most home, garage, backyard, and driving range setups where rollability and moderate cushioning are priorities.

5/8 Closed-Cell Foam

The 5/8 foam is the premium Fairway backing. It is shock-absorbent, waterproof, and provides the strongest anti-fatigue cushioning in the Fairway line. This backing is heavier than the 5mm version and best suited for stationary setups — simulator bays, dedicated practice rooms, and indoor setups where cushioning matters more than portability.

Urethane Coating

The urethane coating is approximately credit-card thickness. It makes the mat the lightest and most rollable option in the Fairway line. Urethane mats are durable, outdoor-suitable, and easy to transport and store. They are available in 2nd Quality configurations at a reduced price point. Urethane is not shock-absorbent or waterproof, but the coating is not damaged by water and rainwater will seep through without retaining a puddle.

Rubber Tee Hole Options

Several Fairway SKUs include pre-punched rubber tee holes. Only claim rubber tee compatibility for the SKUs listed here — other Fairway SKUs do not have confirmed holes.

SKU Size Rubber Tee Holes Backing
454 1 × 2 2 holes 5mm Foam
454A 1 × 2 2 holes 5/8 Foam
304B 5 × 5 8 holes 5mm Foam
304C 4 × 5 4 holes 5mm Foam
304D 3 × 5 4 holes 5mm Foam
304F 5 × 5 8 holes 5/8 Foam
412 3 × 5 4 holes 5/8 Foam
413A 4 × 5 4 holes 5/8 Foam
440A 3 × 5 4 holes Urethane (2nd Quality)
440B 4 × 5 4 holes Urethane (2nd Quality)
Rubber Tees Only on Fairway Mats

Fairway mats support rubber tees only on confirmed rubber tee hole SKUs. Do not use wooden tees on Fairway mats. Only Super Tee mats are designed to hold real wooden tees.

Size Guide

1 x 2 — Compact Portable

The 1x2 Fairway mats are designed for golfers who stand beside the mat rather than on it. Available in both 5mm foam and 5/8 foam backing. Lightweight and easy to transport.

3 x 5 — Standard Home Practice

The most popular size for home practice, garage setups, and backyard use. Large enough to stand on for a full swing. Available in 5mm foam, 5/8 foam, and 2nd Quality urethane backing.

4 x 5 — Extended Stance Room

Adds width over the 3x5 for golfers who want more room for stance variation. Available in 5mm foam, 5/8 foam, and 2nd Quality urethane options.

5 x 5 — Simulator and Full Practice

The 5x5 provides the largest hitting area in the standard Fairway size range. Available in 5mm foam and 5/8 foam with 8 rubber tee holes. The 5/8 foam version is the recommended simulator hitting mat for Fairway-style practice.

6 x 12 — Large Format

The 6x12 Fairway mat is available in 5mm foam backing and is well suited for driving range stations and facility setups where a larger hitting surface area is needed. At 56 to 60 lbs depending on version, two people is recommended for moving a rolled 6x12 mat.

2nd Quality Fairway Mats

All Turf Mats offers three 2nd Quality Fairway mat options — the 440A (3x5), 440B (4x5), and 440C (3x3) — all with urethane coating backing. These are new condition products that are fully usable and functional but may have minor cosmetic or manufacturing imperfections. They are not damaged, used, or refurbished. The same Nylon turf and urethane backing used on standard Fairway mats. The 440A and 440B include 4 rubber tee holes. The 440C does not have confirmed rubber tee holes.

2nd Quality Value

For golfers who want the Nylon Fairway surface and urethane portability at a lower price point, the 2nd Quality options deliver the same core performance at a reduced cost. Minor cosmetic imperfections do not affect hitting performance or durability.

Indoor vs Outdoor Use

All Fairway golf mats use UV-resistant and weather-resistant Nylon turf, making them suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. For outdoor setups, the 5mm foam or urethane-backed versions offer the best portability. For indoor simulator and practice room setups, the 5/8 foam backing provides maximum cushioning and a waterproof base layer.

Care and Cleaning

All Fairway golf mats can be cleaned with a garden hose or pressure washer. The 5/8 foam-backed versions have a waterproof backing that is safe for full rinse cleaning. The 5mm foam backing is not waterproof — rinse the turf surface and allow the mat to dry fully before rolling for storage. Urethane-backed mats can be rinsed normally — the coating is not damaged by water. Allow 24 to 48 hours for any rolled Fairway mat to fully flatten after unrolling.
